Jamia Millia university terminates service of asst prof who raped colleague on pretext of marriage

The administration clarified that the alleged incident took place outside the university premises and was a personal matter

The administration of the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University on Wednesday terminated the services of a 36-year-old contractual assistant professor with the department of political sciences, two days after he was arrested for allegedly raping a colleague and breaching a promise of marriage, according to the university and police.

The administration clarified that the alleged incident took place outside the university premises and was a personal matter. “The university strongly condemned the crime and emphasised that any attack on the dignity and rights of women would not be tolerated,” a JMI official said.

A senior police officer said that a 31-year-old woman approached them on Monday with a complaint against the assistant professor. “The same day, an FIR was lodged against her colleague, who is 36 years old. He was arrested within 24 hours on rape charges and has been sent to judicial custody. He will be interrogated about the crime and to verify the allegations,” the officer said.

According to the complaint lodged by the woman, she met the accused in April 2024 and they got into a physical relationship in June, as he promised to marry her. However, in October, he reneged on the promise claiming that his father was against their union due to a mismatch in horoscopes.

The woman, in her complaint, said she tried approaching the police multiple times but could only muster courage this week.

JMI officials said the university is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all its members. The university said it has an internal complaints committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, 2013, to address such cases.
