Glenn McGrath

Age 56AustraliaAUSTRALIA
Right-arm fast medium Bowler

Born on February 9, 1970, in Dubbo, New South Wales, Glenn Donald McGrath weaponised unrelenting accuracy to become one of the most dominant fast bowlers in cricket history. Lacking the express pace of his contemporaries, the tall right-armer relied on a high-arm release, unwavering seam positioning, and a metronomic line just outside off stump. This persistent pressure extracted subtle, steep bounce, forcing batters into endless cycles of defense until an error became inevitable.

Alongside Shane Warne, his flawless control served as the bowling foundation for Australia's dominant era.McGrath elevated his craft through supreme tactical clarity, famously predicting series outcomes and targeting opposition star batters before delivering on those claims. He held a celebrated mastery over world-class opponents, dismissing West Indian icon Brian Lara 15 times and English opener Michael Atherton a record 19 times in Test cricket.

While renowned for his fierce focus, he also earned widespread affection for his batting ambition, highlighted by a famous score of 61 against New Zealand at Brisbane in 2004. His big-stage temperament peaked in World Cups, where his 71 tournament wickets anchored Australia to three consecutive titles in 1999, 2003, and 2007.

Off the field, McGrath transformed personal trial into a profound national legacy alongside his late wife, Jane, during her battle with breast cancer. Founded in 2005, the McGrath Foundation turned the annual Sydney Test into the world-famous Pink Test, raising millions to fund specialised breast care nurses across Australia. On the field, his rare fiery outbursts were born of intense competitive heat, most notably a heated mid-pitch exchange with West Indian batter Ramnaresh Sarwan in 2003. Through triumph and adversity, his absolute discipline earned him universal respect across the international sporting community.

When he retired after sweeping the 2006-07 Ashes series, McGrath left behind benchmark statistical standards for fast-bowling longevity and excellence. Over 124 Test matches, he captured 563 wickets at an extraordinary average of 21.64, including 29 five-wicket hauls and 3 ten-wicket match bags. His One-Day International career was equally imposing, snaring 381 wickets at 22.02 across 250 matches with an exceptional economy rate of 3.88. Defined by patience, precision, and relentless skill, McGrath remains the quintessential fast-bowling blueprint.
