Continuing his sublime run in his ICC World Cup swansong, opener Quinton de Kock played a breathtaking knock to help South Africa register a massive total against Bangladesh on Tuesday. Slamming his third World Cup 2023 ton at the Wankhede Stadium, De Kock tormented the bowling attack of Bangladesh bowlers in match No.23 of the showpiece event. De Kock, who plied his trade with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for several seasons, entertained the Wankhede crowd with his memorable century.

De Kock played a brilliant knock of 174 off 140 balls to smash multiple records at the ODI World Cup. Breaking a 16-year-old World Cup record, De Kock registered the highest score for a designated wicketkeeper in the ICC event. The Proteas opener has surpassed Australia's Adam Gilchrist, who smashed 149 in the 2007 ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka.

De Kock hits third century of World Cup

The Proteas batter has recorded the second-highest individual score for South Africa in World Cup cricket. De Kock failed to surpass Gary Kirsten, who played a record knock of 188* against UAE in the 1996 World Cup. When it comes to the highest scores for designated wicketkeepers at the World Cup, De Kock is second on the elite list that features former India skipper MS Dhoni.

Former India captain Dhoni holds the record for the highest individual score (183*) by a wicketkeeper in ODIs. Talking more about De Kock’s impressive knock, this was also his third 150-plus score as a designated wicketkeeper in ODIs. No wicketkeeper-batter has registered more 150-plus scores than De Kock in the 50-over format. Thanks to De Kock's whirlwind knock, South Africa became the first team to record three 350-plus scores in a single edition of a World Cup.

De Kock eclipses Rohit and Kohli in World Cup 2023

De Kock smoked seven sixes and 15 fours in his sizzling knock of 174 against Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium. De Kock batted at a strike rate of 124.29 and the star opener enjoyed fruitful partnerships with stand-in skipper Aiden Markram (60) and Heinrich Klaasen (90) in the 50-over contest. The batting exploits of de Kock, Markram and Klaasen propelled South Africa to 382-5 in 50 overs.

The in-form Proteas batter has scored the highest score at the ODI World Cup in India. De Kock has also eclipsed batting icons Rohit Sharma (311) and Virat Kohli (354) in the list of batters with most runs at the 2023 World Cup. The South African batter has amassed 407 runs in 5 games of the ongoing World Cup.
