DTC fixes inquiry into bus fire

A day after a modern low-floor bus caught fire in the Capital, the Delhi Transport Corporation has asked the bus manufacturer to ascertain if there were any design issues that need to be addressed to prevent mishaps.

Blaming a short circuit for the incident, the DTC has also instituted an inquiry to ascertain the reasons that lead to the fire and fixing accountability for it. The committee, comprising DTC engineers and representatives of Tata Motors, the manufacturer, will submit its report in three days.

Experts, however, blame the quality of material used in the bus for the sudden spread of fire. “All seats, interiors, roof puffing material, electrical wiring, plastic fitments and aluminum railings were burnt without recognition.

It is apparent the body fabrication material used in the bus did not have fire resistance/retardant qualities despite the astronomical cost paid to the manufacturer,”said S.P. Singh, senior fellow and coordinator, Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training. Experts have also discarded the CNG-leak theory.
