Hungry and loving it at North Campus

If your tummy starts to growl for food at DU, make use of the glorious options that North Campus showers on the hungry. Ankita Dash reports.

If you are hungry for a college at North Campus and scooting from one to the other browsing cut-off lists and filing forms, chances are you will actually get hungry. Don’t worry. The city’s favourite education hangout is also home to a range of eateries that offer menus as cosmopolitan as the college crowd.

Now, if you want a lowdown on which one offers what, here’s help. We start with what many call the ultimate tribute to Oriental cuisine.

The Chinese alley

A narrow lane in Kamala Nagar market, it consists of a host of Chinese joints. You can walk in and choose from steamed momos, noodles and fried rice. Popular joints include Momos Point, Banzai and Noodles, where an average meal for two costs close to Rs 200. Harsh Sambal, the owner of Momos Point, says, “Momos and Singapuri noodles are in great demand.”

Ziya’s Moroccan Café

Walk further down the same lane and you will come across a dimly-lit, enclosed space with an antique ambience. Students sit back and relax on comfortable couches smoking vapourised air through jars commonly known as the hookahs. Don’t worry, it’s nicotine-free and not harmful. The joint is also famous for its Lebanese rolls and wraps. An average meal here costs Rs 300.

St Stephen’s Cafetaria

Talking of cafés one can’t miss this one. Popular for Minced Cutlet and Nimbu Paani, it is cheap and easy on a student’s wallet. An average meal for one costs Rs 20. “The café was established 130 years ago and there has been no change in the atmosphere,” says Rajesh Verma, the manager.

The Delhi School Of Economics Canteen

Stephen’s neighbours don’t lag behind when it comes to delicious food. The DSE canteen loves experimenting with dishes and is known for its Mutton Dosas and traditional thalis. An average meal costs about Rs 50.

The FMS Canteen

All you vegetarians out there, if you’ve been feeling left out visit this joint. The Crispy Fried Potatoes is a rage here. You can buy a plate for just Rs 15.

Nirula’s

After a sumptuous meal, who doesn’t want some dessert? As you travel to the metro station to catch a train home, stop at Nirula’s for some ice-cream. Isha Truckroo, a local, says, “ I love Jamoca Almond fudge. It’s sinful but I don’t care about putting on weight.”
