Job offers at last for Metro mishap victim

For nearly three years, Mehjabi, 25, who lost both her legs when she was accidentally pushed onto the tracks of Delhi Metro, waited for a job from Delhi government that never came.

An HT report published on January 8 about her plight changed that. Two days later, three organisations have offered her jobs.

The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) was among the first organisations to offer her a job. “Our director-general, RK Pachauri, read the report in HT and wants to offer the girl suitable employment in our organisation,” said a Teri official, who did not wish to be named.

“We have a staff of more than 1,000 and there definitely will be an opening for her. We have projects running in Dehradun also, so she does not need to move to Delhi for work,” he added.

Apart from Teri, two other organisations have also offered her jobs.

On Wednesday, HT reported Mehjabi was finding it difficult to meet her expenses. “I have to come to Delhi almost every other month to help with investigations or submit documents for court hearings,” she had said, while on a visit to Delhi last month.

“Each trip costs at least Rs. 5,000 and I have no job.”
