The Supreme Court on Monday gave advocate RK Anand the option to work with the legal services authority free of cost and also donate Rs. 25 lakh to a law college for setting up a library or a computer centre in case he did not wish the court to deliver a verdict on a plea challenging his imprisonment in contempt case.

A bench of Justice GS Singhvi, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice CK Prasad gave one week's time to Anand and fixed September 24 for further hearing of the plea.

Anand is facing contempt charges for trying to influence a key witness in the hit-and-run case involving his client Sanjeev Nanda.

The Delhi High Court had in August 2008 convicted Anand for contempt and barred him from practising before it and the subordinate courts for four months.A fine of R2,000 was imposed on the lawyer.

Giving him the option the bench said that there was nothing left in Anand's appeal and that it would like to reserve its judgement in the matter.

The court told his counsel to either conclude the arguments or pay back to the society by giving money to a deserving law college.
