Andhra Pradesh is India’s eighth largest state in terms of area and the tenth largest in terms of population. It is bounded by Tamil Nadu to the south, Karnataka to the southwest and west, Telangana to the northwest, and Odisha to the northeast.

FIGURES & FACTS

Only place in South India that receives annual snowfall Lambasingi, a village in state’s Visakhapatnam district, is the only place in South India which re ceives snowfall. It is also nicknamed as the Kashmir of AndhraPradesh.

Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala-Tirupati, Rama Krishna Mission Beach in Visakhapatnam, Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi in Anantpur district, Belum Caves in Kurnool district, INS Kurusura Submarine Museum in Visakhapatnam, and Ubbalamadugu Falls.

MAIN DANCE FORM

Kuchipudi is the main dance form of the state. Sidhendrayogi of Movva village in Krishna district created the Kuchipudi dance form in the 15th century. The Kuchipudi dance consists of Nritya and Natya.

BEACHES

Ramakrishna beach, more popularly known as RK beach in Visakhapatnam, is located in the heart of city’s coastline. If you stand in the middle, on the right you can see the Dolphin’s Nose and on the left, you can see the INS Kursura parked just by the sea. Howtoprepare it Heat oil in avesseland add the mustardand methi seeds and let them splutter.Then add the curry leavestoitand stir.Add chopped onionsand fry till the onions turn transparent. Addginger-garlic pasteand fry fo r3minutes.Add turmeric,coriander,cumin, redchilli powder andsalt. Fryfor aminute. Then add the tamarind extract and bring it to boil. Nowplacethe fish pieces in the vesseland cook covered.Add thegreen chillis and cook on lowheat for10minutes. Letthe saucethicken till oil separates. Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.Now serve it hot itwith steamed rice.

CHEPALA PULUSU

The chepala pulusu literally means ‘fish curry’. It is a traditional Andhra style fish curry which is prepared using fish and tamarind extract

ART & CRAFT

Two of the most prominent centres of kalamkari production are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Etikoppaka in Visakhapatnam is notable for its Lac industry, producing lacquered wooden toys and wares. The Kondapalli toys are made from soft wood which are found in nearby Kondapalli Hills

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Kuchipudi exponent Shobha Naidu, badminton players Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, tennis star Sania Mirza, former CM NT Rama Rao, and cricketer VVS Laxman and Mohammad Azharuddin among others.

MD. AZHARUDDIN

Mohammad Azharuddin is a politician and former cricketer. He was renowned as an elegant middle-order batsman and captain of the Indian cricket team in 47 Test matches during the 1990s.

WILDLIFE

Mangrove swamps and palm trees fringe the coastal plain of the state while thorny vegetation covers the hills of the Deccan Plateau. Teak, rosewood, wild fruit trees and bamboo are plentiful. Neem, banyan, mango and pipal are among the common trees. Animals such as tigers, blackbucks, hyenas, sloth bears, gaurs, and chital can be found in the hills and forest areas.
