Garo Hills shines in SSLC results, St. Anthony’s tops HSSLC

Sherwood School at Tura in West Garo Hills secured the first four positions in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Friday.

Girls outshined boys in both the examinations.

The overall pass percentage came up to 56.76%, an increase of 2.72% when compared to last year’s 54.04%. However, the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Arts) pass percentage saw a slight drop when compared to 2017, with an overall pass percentage of 74.78% this year. An overall pass percentage of 75.38% was recorded in 2017.

As many as 28,424 of 50,077 students from 593 schools cleared the SSLC exams held in 137 centres, while 17,318 of 23,160 students from 226 schools who appeared for the HSSLC exams held in 100 centres were declared successful by the board.

While Sherwood School stole the limelight in the SSLC category, Shillong-based St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School repeated last year’s performance by topping the HSSLC (Arts) examinations again this year. With today’s results, St Anthony’s has wrapped up all three streams with top honours. On May 10, the school nearly made a clean sweep of the science stream while succeeding in getting as many as seven students into its top 10.

Sherwood School also improved its performance, securing the second, third, fourth, seventh and eighteenth position in the SSLC-2018 examination. St Anthony’s HS School also bagged the third, fifth, eight, ninth and tenth positions in the HSSLC examination.

Anurag Tewari of Sherwood School, Tura, was this year’s topper in the SSLC examination with 581 marks, while Lily Kharthangmaw of St Anthony’s HS School topped the HSSLC examination with a total score of 440 marks.

East Khasi Hills district scored the highest pass percentage at 79.04% while South West Garo Hills registered the lowest at 26.65% in the SSLC examination. In the HSSLC examination, Ri Bhoi district recorded the highest pass percentage with 86.01% while South Garo Hills could manage only 48.21%.

Meanwhile, three candidates were expelled for adopting unfair means in the SSLC and HSSLC examinations (two and one respectively). They have been debarred from appearing in the 2019 examinations.
