Jersey trailer: Shahid Kapoor shows a cricketer's struggles and grit, fans hope 'there are no delays in release now'
Jersey trailer: The new trailer of Shahid Kapoor's upcoming film Jersey was launched on Monday. The film, which saw its release delayed due to Covid-19, is now hitting the screens on April 14.
Shahid Kapoor shared the new trailer of his upcoming cricket-themed film Jersey on Monday afternoon. The film is a remake of a Telugu movie of the same name and has been directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, who also helmed the original. Jersey is releasing in theatres later this month after a four-month delay due to Covid-19. Fans have shared praise for the film online and also hoped that the film does not face delay in release yet again. In the film, Shahid plays a washed out cricketer who tries to find his form and fame once again on the cricket field, egged on by his son. The film also stars Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur in pivotal roles. The new trailer opens with a montage of Shahid's strokeplay on the cricket field, following which Mrunal is seen telling him, "You had your chance!" We then get glimpses of people putting down Shahid's character and asking him to make way for others since he is '36 years old'. But then as his son says to him, "When you play cricket, you look like a hero to me," Shahid returns to the ground.
Jersey's official synopsis reads, "An ex-cricketer struggling to make ends meet, wants to fulfill his child's wish of getting a Jersey but in the process comes face to face with his heroic past and is forced to decide if he will rise to the occasion and become a symbol of hope or continue to live a life as a loser?"
Fans heaped praises for the film and Shahid in the comments section of the video. Referring to Nani, who starred in the original Telugu film, one fan wrote, "Massive respect for Shahid. He just nailed it. Hope he does justice to this movie same as Nani." Another fan commented, "Shahid Kapoor is back (fire emojis)." A few cautious Shahid fans wished that, unlike last time, Jersey does not face any delays in its release. "I hope there are no delays in release now. We have been waiting a long time," wrote a fan.
The original Jersey starred Nani in the lead. The film went on to win a National Award as well. Speaking with Pinkvilla last year, Nani was all praise for Shahid and believed that he will deliver a memorable performance. "I think he will do it better. He is a brilliant performer and can really get into the skin of the character,” he said. Nani added that he's seen pictures of the Hindi version of Jersey and they look ‘promising.’
The Hindi version of Jersey was originally set to release in theatres on December 31, 2021, but was pushed back after the rise of Omicron cases in the country. The film will now release on April 14.
