Ranveer Singh, as part of his film 83’s promotions, shared a video of his father-in-law, badminton legend Prakash Padukone sharing his memories of the 1983 Cricket World Cup finals. India had beaten West Indies to win the World Cup for the first time in history.
Taking to Instagram, Ranveer shared a video of wife Deepika Padukone's father and wrote, “The Living Legend of Badminton, a World Champion himself & my dear father-in-law Prakash Padukone, cherishes the memories of the 1983 World Cup triumph! 83 releasing in cinemas on 24th Dec, 2021, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Also in 3D. #ThisIs83.”
In the video, Prakash revealed he was playing a tournament in Denmark and couldn't watch the match live. However, he did keep a tab on the score via the radio and the BBC news.
“25th June, 1983, was a landmark day in the history of Indian sports. India won the world cup for the first time, most unexpectedly! We were in Denmark at that time. I was playing professional badminton. I couldn't see the match live. Trying to get the news either from the radio or BBC. When we heard that India had won the world cup, I think it was unbelievable. India had beaten the mighty West Indies in those days. That was a turning point for Indian cricket. From what was a sport, became a religion,” he said.
83, the film, revolves around the events that unfolded at the 1983 World Cup. Ranveer Singh plays the role of Kapil Dev in the movie while Deepika plays the role of Kapil's wife Romi Dev. Deepika is also the co-producer of the film. The film recently premiered at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah and received a standing ovation.
