Jr NTR explains why RRR wasn't chosen over Last Film Show as India's Oscar entry: 'I don’t think it's politics...'

Jan 15, 2023 01:21 AM IST

RRR was not chosen as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at Oscars 2023 despite the Telugu film getting commercial as well as critical acclaim. Actors Jr NTR and Ram Charan responded to the ongoing Oscars debate in a recent interview.

RRR won big at the recent 80th Golden Globe awards, where Naatu Naatu took the award for Best Original Song. The RRR team is now eyeing an Oscar nomination and are campaigning for the film in Hollywood. Pan Nalin's Last Film Show has been sent as India's official Oscar entry for the Best International Film category. In a recent interview, when Jr NTR and Ram Charan where asked about their thoughts on why their massively successful film RRR was not chosen as India's official entry at the Oscars, the stars had an interesting response. Jr NTR spoke about Hindi being the national language, and said their Telugu film RRR had made them proud, and whether it was chosen as India's entry for Oscars or not, did not matter.

Jr NTR told Variety, "I don’t think there is a lot of politics going on with what films should go. I think the panel, which is sitting down there knows what they do the best... Hindi has primarily been a national language for a very long time and that’s why it has taken prominence. For us, choose RRR or don’t choose RRR, RRR has already made us proud.” Ram Charan added to the answer in a lighthearted fashion, saying, “He (Jr. NTR) is being really humble but I want these two awards... I just don’t want to jinx it.”

In the same interview, NTR Jr also responded to a question that asked whether both the actors could see themselves swapping each others roles in the film. Jr NTR said that his co-star Ram Charan is more of an introvert in real life, so he can definitely see him in more of the 'water' zone for the movie. Jr NTR said that with Ram Charan you never know what is happening inside, unless he is willing to show it in the scene, because it is so peripheral in nature.

At the Golden Globes, SS Rajamouli's RRR missed out on the Best Non-English Language Film award, which was won by Argentina, 1985 from Argentina. Apart from Ram Charan and Jr NTR, the RRR cast includes Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn as well as British actors Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody and Olivia Morris. The global blockbuster has been co-written by SS Rajamouli and his father, screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad. The film was released in India on March 24, 2022.
