The Marvel Cinematic Universe produced its biggest ever hit with Avengers: Infinity War, the 19th film in the superhero franchise that began with 2008’s Iron Man. Over the weekend, Infinity War crossed the first Avengers film’s $1.5 billion (Rs 10,000 crore) global box office haul to become the biggest Marvel movie ever, and the biggest film of the year. With $1.6 billion in the bank, and all eyes set on the $2 billion (Rs 13,000 crore) mark -- only three films in history have made more - here’s a look at every box office record the Marvel juggernaut has broken.

A fourth Avengers film has been scheduled for release in one year. Disney chief Bob Iger recently confirmed that while Avengers 4 will be a ‘significant conclusion’ for the MCU as we know it, the studio had no plans to stop making more Marvel movies. He said that they had over 7000 characters to mine and hinted at a possible merging of the X-Men and Marvel universes, after Disney’s acquisition of Fox comes through.

2019 will also see the release of Captain Marvel and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and both films are expected to make close to $1 billion worldwide, according to a Forbes report. The same report predicts a sure-shot $2 billion gross for Avengers 4.
