The airline processed refunds totalling ₹610 crore so far against cancelled or severely delayed flights, and delivered 3,000 pieces of baggage to passengers across the country as of Saturday. The move comes after the Ministry of Civil Aviation asked the airline to process refunds and baggage by 8 pm on Sunday.
IndiGo said it is operating 1,650 flights of its 2,300 daily domestic and international flights on Sunday, and 650 remain cancelled for the day, amid the airline's operations gradually stabilising after massive disruptions in the last five days.
On Sunday, 115 flights were cancelled at Hyderabad airport, 112 at Mumbai airport, 109 in Delhi, 38 in Chennai and 11 in Amritsar. Since Tuesday, IndiGo has cancelled more than 2,000 flights and delayed many others while leaving passengers stranded at the airports.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers after the massive flight disruptions over the past few days became the country’s worst aviation crisis in years.
Meanwhile, the civil aviation ministry on Saturday directed the airline to clear all pending refunds to passengers impacted by flight cancellations by 8 pm on December 7 (Sunday). The ministry also stepped in and imposed fare caps on domestic flights after airfares rose sharply between destinations in the country as stranded passengers looked for alternatives.

IndiGo flights cancelled flights live: Amid the mass cancellation of IndiGo flights over the past few days, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation granted IndiGo relief from provisions limiting pilot duty hours at night until February 10, rules that were first announced in January 2024.
Here's a look at them:
- NIGHT DUTY WINDOW
THE RULE: Defined "night duty" as any work period touching 12 am to 6 am. This extension was designed to capture the "Window of Circadian Low" -the biological period when human alertness is lowest.
THE EXEMPTION: Reverts definition to 12am-5 am for IndiGo's A320 fleet.
- NIGHT LANDING LIMITS
THE RULE: Pilots flying during the night window were strictly capped at two landings to minimise high-risk manoeuvres while fatigued.
THE EXEMPTION: Suspends the two-landing limit entirely for IndiGo.
- WEEKLY REST REQUIREMENTS
THE RULE: Mandated a continuous 48-hour weekly rest period that could not include annual leave days, ensuring pilots received genuine recovery time
THE EXEMPTION: Restriction on leave substitution for all operators, not just IndiGo, withdrawn
- NIGHT-DAY DUTY OVERLAP
THE RULE: Imposed strict duty-time reductions for any flight encroaching on the critical 2am to 6am window.

"Addressing the recent disruptions in our network, we had cancelled a significant number of flights and operated little above 700 flights yesterday connecting 113 destinations. The main objective was to reboot the network, systems, and rosters so that we could start afresh today with higher number of flights, improved stability, and there are some early signs of improvement.
Today, we are on our way to operate over 1500 flights by end of day. With regards to destinations, over 95% of network connectivity has already been re-established as we are able to operate to 135 out of the existing 138 destinations in operations. While we understand that we have a long way to go, we are committed to build back the trust of our customers. We would like to thank all our partners and government agencies for their constant support and guidance. Most of all we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our customers and staff for their patience and cooperation through these tough times. We apologise once again."
IndiGo flights cancelled live: What led to the IndiGo ‘operational crisis’?
IndiGo flights cancelled live: IndiGo has attributed the chaos to a “multitude of unforeseen operational challenges" amid the mass cancellation of flights over the past few days.
However, the DGCA said in a notice issued to IndiGo CEO that the primary cause of the flight disruptions is non-provisioning of adequate arrangements to cater to the revised requirements for smooth implementation of the approved FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limitations) scheme for the airline.
If you are wondering what these norms are, you can read them here.
