Kolkata election 2026 result LIVE: Didi stands, Suvendu storms, or city surprises?

Kolkata election 2026 result highlights: The two-way battle between the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party turned heated as counting of votes for 11 assembly seats in West Bengal’s Kolkata district continued. The Kolkata seats in included Chowrangee, Entally, Beleghata, Jorasanko, Shyampukur, Maniktala, Kashipur-Belgachia, Bhabanipur, Rashbehari, Ballygunge and Kolkata Port.

Chowrangee was won by Nayna Bandyopadhyay of TMC, Entally by Sandipan Saha of TMC, and Beleghata by Kunal Kumar Ghosh of TMC.

Jorasanko was won by Vijay Ojha of BJP, Shyampukur by Purnima Chakraborty of BJP, Maniktala by Tapas Roy of BJP, and Kashipur-Belgachia by Kamala Kanta Hansda of BJP.

Bhabanipur was won by Suvendu Adhikari of BJP, while Rashbehari went to Swapan Dasgupta of BJP. Ballygunge was won by Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay of TMC, and Kolkata Port by Firhad Hakim of TMC.

All eyes were on Bhabanipur

All eyes were on Bhabanipur, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced BJP leader and former TMC MLA Suvendu Adhikari in a high-stakes contest.

Adhikari won the seat by a margin of over 15,000 votes.

Both emotionally and politically, Kolkata sits right at the centre of India's most fiercely contested Legislative elections as West Bengal gears up for counting day on May 4, 2026. The City of Joy comprises 11 assembly seats, all of which were won by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in the 2021 state elections. But quite a lot has changed in the last five years, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) having made its presence felt in the state and its capital.

West Bengal chief minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who ruled the state for 15 unbroken years, is once again contesting from Bhabanipur — the south Kolkata constituency that has come to define her political identity. But on the other side of the net stands BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, the man who famously defeated Mamata in Nandigram in 2021. While the leader of the opposition has his own battle elsewhere, BJP has heavily invested in him to crack open the Kolkata code, which has long eluded the party. The Left and Congress, on the other hand, have largely become irrelevant bystanders, reducing the battle for Kolkata between TMC and BJP.

Kolkata election 2026 result | Key points

-Votes for 11 assembly seats of West Bengal’s Kolkata district are being counted along with 283 across the state that went to polls over two phases on April 23 and 29.

-The West Bengal assembly elections are taking place alongside that for three more states - Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu - and the Union territory of Puducherry.

The 11 assembly seats of Kolkata are: Chowranghee, Entally, Beliaghata, Maniktala, Kashipur-Belgachia, Shyampukur, Jorasanko, Bhabanipur, Rashbehari, Ballygunge, and Kolkata Port.

-Among the 11 seats, Bhabanipur remains the most closely watched due to the fiery contest between chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her old aide-turned-foe Suvendu Adhikari, who is fighting on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

-A comfortable win in Bhabanipur could serve as a strong signal for TMC and Mamata, with this constituency comprising people of mixed ethnicity, while a defeat or even a win by a narrow margin, could serve as a shocker.

-Kolkata has been on BJP's priority list where educated, anti-incumbency voters have been left frustrated by the recent school jobs scam and the RG Kar rape-murder case. BJP made these the centrepiece of their attack. For TMC, their electoral shield was welfare delivery, continuity and banking on being protector of the Bengali culture.

-TMC has dominated Kolkata since 2011. But 2026 feels different. By the evening of May 4, West Bengal will know if Mamata will remain the undisputed ruler of the city or BJP will finally take down the fortress to wave the saffron flag in Kolkata.

This is the BJP's plan, I have been saying this since yesterday that they will be shown ahead first. They have stopped counting at many places. Such machines have been found in Kalyani, where there is no match; atrocities are being committed against TMC from all sides through central forces. Through SIR, they tried to steal votes, and even now, we are ahead by more than 100 seats, which is not being reported. Everything is being reported wrong. The Election Commission is working entirely as per its own will, and central forces are also with them. The police are also working with the central forces. I tell party workers that there is no need to feel disheartened; you will win after sunset. The counting of 2-4 rounds has taken place, the counting goes up to 14-18 rounds, and we will win. There is no need for anyone to be afraid."

In a dramatic reversal, Suvendu Adhikari, who is also contesting from Nandigram, has challenged Mamata Banerjee in her home turf now. He branded this the "final nail in the coffin" for the TMC. That phrase was used in reference to the vote-on-account tabled by TMC in February. “Today, in the vote-on-account, finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, following the instructions of Mamata Banerjee, put the final nail in the coffin of the dreams of 2.15 crore youths, clearly indicating that they should not expect jobs from the government,” he had said.

Kolkata election 2026 result LIVE: Mamata vs Suvendu - a brief look at how allies turned adversaries

Kolkata election 2026 result LIVE: Suvendu has long served as Mamata's lieutenant in TMC and was at the forefront during the 2007/08 Nandigram movement against the then-Left Front government. That very movement had propelled Mamata to a 2011 Legislative Election win ending 34 years of Communist rule in Bengal.

It was only in 2020 when Suvendu changed base and joined BJP after realising that he could be sidelined from the party that he helped build, amid the rising influence of Mamata's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.

The rivalry eventually took shape in the 2021 election when Mamata challenged Suvendu on his home turf in Nandigram. The former lost by a razor-thin margin of 1956 votes. Although it was a personal defeat for Mamata, TMC won across the state.
