Monsoon Highlights: Delhi to receive moderate rainfall over next 5 days, IMD says

India Weather Highlights: Southwest monsoon, despite delayed onset and slow start, is expected to cover the whole country over the next two to three days.

Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of India including Delhi and Mumbai leading to waterlogging issues. India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and orange alert for Delhi on Thursday. IMD said, Delhi NCR may witness rainfall till Sunday. The southwest monsoon, despite a delayed onset and weak start, is now expected to cover the entire country over the next two-three days, nearly a week before its expected date, the IMD said on Wednesday. If the predictions come true, the monsoon would have taken only 22 days to cover the entire country, even after its onset over Kerala was delayed by a week.

The southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of north Arabian Sea and some more parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday, IMD said in its bulletin. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through Bikaner (Rajasthan), Narnaul (Haryana) and Firozpur (Punjab).

The southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of north Arabian Sea and some more parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday, IMD said in its bulletin. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through Bikaner (Rajasthan), Narnaul (Haryana) and Firozpur (Punjab).

Badrinath national highway blocked following landslide, over 10,000 pilgrims stranded

The Badrinath national highway was blocked on Thursday following a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, leaving over 10,000 pilgrims stranded for hours, according to officials.

The landslide occurred around 9:50 am near Chhinka and the debris had not been cleared till late evening. The stranded pilgrims included those who were on their way to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib, the officials said.

A 100-metre stretch of the highway was affected by the landslide, leading to a huge traffic jam. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway, they said.

Rain intensity reduces in Mumbai, but 1 more dies as tree falls on hut

A 22-year-old man was killed and another injured on Thursday after a tree fell on their hut in Mumbai amid rains, while two persons were swept away in swollen water bodies in adjoining Thane and Palghar districts which witnessed heavy showers, officials said. 

This was the third death due to tree fall in the last two days in the financial capital. Mumbai was lashed by heavy rains on Wednesday and overnight, but as the day progressed, their intensity reduced.

Flash flood in Himachal’s Lahaul and Spiti, 1 drown in Mandi

One person was killed in an accidental drowning incident in Himachal’s Mandi on Thursday and Sansari-Killar-Tandi road was blocked for traffic after a flash flood occurred in Lahaul and Spiti’s Udaipur, the state emergency operation centre said.

No major incidents of landslides were reported in the state, it said.

The vehicles stranded in Tindi area have been evacuated safely, according to the state emergency operation centre.

Moderate to heavy rainfall likely at several districts in Goa in next 4-5 days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday informed that several districts in Goa are very likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall in the next 4-5 days.

"In continuation of the previous forecasts with active monsoon conditions persisting over Goa, moderate to heavy rainfall is very likely at most places over North Goa & South Goa districts of the state on June 29, 30 and July 1, 2 and 3, 2023", said an IMD statement.

Southern states, Bihar get deficient monsoon rains in June

The southwest monsoon has been playing truant from most southern states and Bihar even as it brought bountiful showers in Rajasthan and the granary states of Punjab and Haryana in the first month of the season.

According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) data, the first month of the monsoon season saw the country receive 136.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 157.7 mm, a deficit of 13 per cent, as on June 29.

Poor crop yield due to heavy rainfall and landslides over the past few days here has hiked the prices of vegetables such as ginger and tomato, with consumers demanding government intervention to address the issue.

The recent price surge due to a demand-supply gap has posed significant challenges for low-income individuals who struggle to afford essential commodities.

With tomatoes priced at around 120 per kg and ginger at 400 per kg, people are being compelled to forgo these items, Bharat Bhushan, a customer, said.

Delhi likely to receive light to moderate rainfall in next 5 days: IMD

Cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall is expected in the national capital in the next five days, the weather department said on Thursday. Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital on Thursday, bringing down the minimum temperature to 23.8 degrees Celsius – four notches below the season's average.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature settled at 34.2 degrees Celsius – three notches below the normal, an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin said. After heavy rainfall in Delhi and its surrounding areas, the weather department issued an 'orange' alert in the city.

The IMD uses four colour codes for weather warnings – 'green' (no action needed), 'yellow' (watch and stay updated), 'orange' (be prepared) and 'red' (take action). The orange alert is a warning to be prepared, pointing to the possibility of traffic disruptions and waterlogging, which was reported in several parts of the city.

Four children killed in wall collapse in Gujarat; five injured

Four children under the age of five were killed and five others injured when a wall of a defunct factory collapsed on their makeshift tents amid heavy rains in an industrial area in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Thursday, said the police.

The victims’ families belong to Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh and have migrated here to work as labourers at a construction site near an unused chemical factory at Chandrapura village in Halol taluka, said the police.

Families of construction workers were living in makeshift tents that they had erected adjacent to the boundary wall of the factory, said District Superintendent of Police Himanshu Solanki.

“The wall suddenly collapsed on these families amid rain. Of the total nine persons injured in the wall collapse, four children under the age of five died on the spot,” he said.

Himachal Pradesh: Heavy rainfall disrupts normal life in Shimla

Heavy rain lashed Himachal Pradesh's capital, Shimla, on Wednesday, amid rounds of rainfall hitting the entire state.

The incessant rains have led to a flood-like situation in the state. In addition, it is also disrupting the everyday lives of people.

Rahul, a tourist from Punjab, told ANI that he is stuck inside his hotel room due to the room.

"It has been raining heavily and we are stuck inside our hotel rooms. Due to the rain, we could not go anywhere outside," said Rahul.

The monsoon, which is now in its advanced stage is active in the country according to the weather department in India and several states are expected to receive heavy rainfall in the coming few days.

Naresh Kumar, senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said, "Monsoon is in its advanced stage and is active. We can see clouds over Kokan, Goa, Central India, as well as Northeastern states."

The senior scientist predicted heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh over the next two days.

"The Low-Pressure area that originated from the northwest bay has now moved to the central part of north Madhya Pradesh. In the coming two days, Madhya Pradesh may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. More than 12 cm of rain is expected," he said.

Moderate to heavy rainfall lash parts of Rajasthan

Moderate to heavy rainfall occurred in parts of Rajasthan during the last 24 hours with Niwai in Tonk and Dechu in Jodhpur receiving a maximum of 11 cm rains.

According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, widespread rainfall occurred in the state after the advancement of the southwest monsoon.

Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the monsoon in the state, the department said.

During a period of 24 hours ending at 8.30 am Thursday, the maximum rainfall was 11 cm in Tonk district's Niwai town and Dechu of Jodhpur district.

Marwar junction (Pali) and Barmer received 7 cm of rain, Bansur (Alwar) and Jahajpur (Bhilwara) recorded 6 cm while several other areas recorded below 6 cm of rain during this period.

Heavy rains lash parts of Gujarat; Pardi taluka receives 182 mm rainfall in 36 hours

Several parts of south Gujarat received heavy rainfall during the last 36 hours and more showers are expected in the next two days, officials said on Thursday. 

The downpour threw life out of gear and affected the movement of traffic in Valsad, Surat, Navsari and Tapi districts of south Gujarat as heavy rains resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas as well as closure of some roads in rural parts, they said. 

Following a quick spell of shower in the morning, several roads of Ahmedabad city were also inundated in knee-deep water and people had to wade through it to reach their destinations. 

In the last 36 hours ending at 6 am on Thursday, Pardi taluka of Valsad district in south Gujarat received as much as 182 mm rainfall, a release by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde performed the 'maha pooja' of Lord Vitthal and Goddess Rukmini at a temple in Pandharpur town of Solapur district on the occasion of 'Ashadhi Ekadashi' on Thursday.

Heavy rains predicted in Karnataka coast for next 10 days; NDRF personnel to be stationed, pumps kept ready in advance

The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are likely to receive widespread rainfall with certain areas getting very heavy rains in the next 10 days, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said. 

The coastal districts are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115 mm), with isolated places receiving very heavy rains (up to 244.4 mm) during the period, a KSNDMC release said. 

Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely to occur at isolated places over all the districts of coastal Karnataka. Heavy rains in coastal areas may coincide with high tide, resulting in waterlogging and flooding of low-lying areas. District administrations have been asked to deploy de-watering pumps and other equipment in such areas in advance to handle the situation if needed.

Gurugram receives morning showers, waterlogging at over 25 areas

Continuous rainfall for three hours, followed by intermittent showers for a couple more on Thursday morning led to waterlogging in more than 25 areas here and traffic congestions at some places, including at Narsinghpur.

Rains started around 6 am in the city and police and Gurugram administration were present at key areas to remove excess water through pumps to help traffic movement.

The downpour caused waterlogging in the service road of Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Narsinghpur, Basai road, Rajendra Park, Sector 52, Sector 55, Sector 56, Ardee City, Railway Road, Rajeev Chowk, Kadipur, Vatika Chowk, Delhi road, Sector-14, Udyog Vihar, Bajghera etc, among other areas.

IMD's senior scientist Dr Naresh Kumar, speaking to ANI said, "Monsoon is in its advanced stage and is active. In the coming two days, Madhya Pradesh may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. More than 12 cm of rain is expected in MP. We are expecting extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm) in parts of South Gujarat and Konkan Goa today. Badrinath NH blocked following landslides

The Badrinath national highway was blocked on Thursday following a landslide triggered by heavy rain near Chhinka in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.

A mound of debris accumulated on the road in the wake of the landslide near Chhinka, additional information officer Ravindra Singh Negi said. Efforts are on to clear the rubble and restore traffic along the route, he said. Many places in Chamoli district were lashed by heavy rains on Wednesday night.

Rain lashes Delhi-NCR, waterlogging reported from several locations

Light and heavy rain lashed several areas of Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning bringing down the minimum temperature to 27.1 degrees Celsius.

However, some parts of the national capital witnessed waterlogging after the rainfall.

As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is expected to experience a cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thundershowers on Thursday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 36.4°C and 27.1°C respectively, one notch below the season's average.

"A moderate/intense cloud patch is passing across the #DelhiNCR, which is very likely to cause light to moderate rain with few spells of intense rain over Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas during the next 2 hours," IMD said in a tweet at 10:35 AM today.

Rains lash Mumbai and suburbs; 1 person killed in tree fall incident

A 22-year-old person was killed and another one injured on Thursday after a tree fell on their hut in Mumbai as moderate to heavy rains lashed the city and its suburbs in the last 24 hours, officials said.

This is the third death here in two days in tree fall incidents amid rains. On Wednesday, two persons were killed in separate tree fall incidents in Mumbai's western suburbs.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an `orange alert', forecasting heavy to very heavy rains on Thursday in six Maharashtra districts - Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Nashik.
