The plan did not work and the police on Sunday arrested Umar Ali (22) and two of his accomplices — Noor Hussain (20) and Usman Ali (25).

Airoli residents, Umar and Hussain, work at a printing press in Kalwa, while Usman owns a shop there.

“On January 14, Hussain came to the police station saying Umar was kidnapped. He said they had withdrawn Rs 2.5 lakh from the Bank of Maharashtra branch in Kalwa the same morning,” said VB Desai, senior inspector.

Hussain said when the duo came out of the bank, a man brandished a weapon and forcefully pushed Umar into a black car and fled.

“Hussain was not giving clear details about the car or number,” said Desai.

It was confirmed that the duo had withdrawn Rs 2.5 lakh from the account of their employer and Hussain’s cousin Ravi Un. “We came to know that Umar had returned to his Airoli home. We interrogated him. Both of them confessed to staging the kidnapping as Umar wanted the money for his cousin sister's wedding,” said Desai.
