GSVM Medical College Principal SK Katiyar flagged off the rally from the Medical College campus, which ended at the office of Upper Ayukt, where they handed over a memorandum to RD Parival upper Ayukt Kanpur Mandal.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Katiyar said, “we Indians are very good at making plans but fail to implement it efficiently. We are forced to organise this rally to advocate breast-feeding”.

Dr VN Tripathi Head of department and convenor said that the motto of the rally was not only to advocate breast-feeding but also to make people aware of the Infant Milk Substitutes, Feeding Bottles and Infant Feeds (Regulation of production, Supply and Distribution) Act, [IMS Act] 2003, which says that it is illegal to distribute baby food, milk and milk bottles to any hospital or social service institution by any company.

He further claimed that today women feed their infants milk powder after watching advertisements on the television.

But the truth is totally different because this powder milk lacks the amount of nutrition needed by the baby and can also cause diseases like diarrhoea, allergy and other infections. This can be a hindrance in its proper mental growth.

Dr Margret Narayan project Officer (health and nutrition UNICEF) said that the IMS Act is still unknown to the general public, therefore, from now on, they should always be aware, so that they can stop this if someone is found violating it.

Upper Commissioner RD Parival addressed the rally and said that mothers should not be attracted towards powder milk to feed their babies.

Those present in the rally were Dr MM Maithani, Dr Pradeep Mattu, Dr Mahesh Khattar, Dr Raizada, Kamal Trivedi, medical students, professors and others.
