Electrification in 8 dists to be complete by 2007

CHAIRMAN AND managing director of the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, RP Singh said the electrification work under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme (RGRE) would be completed in villages of the state’s eight districts by October 2007.
Talking to media persons here on Thursday evening, he said rural electrification works under the RGRE scheme were in progress in villages of Ballia, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau, Sitapur, Kushinagar, Rae Bareli and Sultanpur districts. He added these works would be completed till October 2007.
Speaking over the national-level functioning of the Power Grid Corporation, he said, “There is a target of increasing its power production from the present 9,500 megawatts to 37,000 megawatts by 2012 to cater to the demand of electricity in the country.”He said the corporation had registered a tremendous growth during a short span of 15 years as a result of which the corporation’s capital rose from Rs 6,500 crore to Rs 25,000 crore at present. This was the highest growth of any power corporation in the world.
To a query about power crisis, he said loss of electricity in line should be checked to combat the problems of power crisis. He stressed the need to create awareness in this regard.
“Our working capacity has increased seven times more during the last 15 years with partial increase in number of employees because each and every employee is entrusted work with the feeling of empowerment. The work is also decentralised amongst employees so the company is progressive,” he said.
Highlighting the achievements of the company, he said it was engaged in completing the power projects in less time, bringing down the projects’ cost. He informed the corporation had completed the transmission project of 2100 kilometers, Asia’s longest line from Teacher to Kanyakumari in 33 months instead of the fixed 46 months.
Derailment being probed
A TEAM of Railway officials, headed by Commissioner Railway Safety (CRS) RK Kardam, started the investigation on Friday in the derailment of the Allahabad-bound Bhatni passenger train near Kidiharapur railway station in Ballia district on Wednesday. It may be mentioned that half a dozen passengers were seriously injured when 10 bogies of the Allahabad-bound Bhatni passenger train derailed near Kidiharapur railway station in Ballia district on Wednesday morning. A major disaster was averted due to the slow speed of the overcrowded train.
The team of railway officials reached the site of the accident on Friday to inquire into the cause of the derailment.
Divisional Railway Manager Naveen Tandon, who is the member of investigating team, said that the inquiry had begun and the team was investigating every aspect behind the derailment.
