Hospital records differ from official claims

THE EPIDEMIC cell at the KPM Hospital and Vector- borne Disease Cell at the District Malaria Office stated that there was no case of water or vector-borne diseases in the city in this season.
The water or vector-borne diseases consist of measles, chicken pox, fever, dengue, filarial and malaria.
The LLR Hospital records, however, tell a different tale. At least a dozen patients inflicted with vivax malaria were admitted to the hospital.
Besides, a 19-year-old girl identified as Ruby, who was reportedly suffering from Japanese Encephalitis (JE), was admitted to the hospital. While Rubi was discharged from the hospital, the Vector-borne Decease Cell had no information about her case.
At present, a two-year-old girl Pooja, daughter of Santosh Kumar and resident of Koyla Nagar in Chakeri, is undergoing treatment at ward no 1 of the LLR Hospital.
Dr Deepak Sachan, who is treating Pooja, told HT that as Pooja had the symptoms of JE, her cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) was sent for testing.
“She is being treated for viral encephalitis,” Dr Sachan added. The vector-borne disease cell has no information about Pooja, too. An eight-year-old girl Ayushi was reportedly down with dengue.
She underwent treatment at a private hospital in Kalyanpur. Though she was discharged from the hospital, there was no record available about Ayushi at the CMO office. Additional chief medical officer (ACMO) Dr Madan Mohan said there was no suspected case of dengue or encephalitis. He feels that if the reporting of suspected case is imperative then only slides of patients should be sent for IgM ELISA testing.
District epidemic officer and incharge of epidemic cell Dr AK Singh also said that there was no case of water or vector-borne diseases.
He said, “To my knowledge, there is not a single case of epidemic in this season.” He further said that there were no cases of epidemic at the LLR Hospital, too.
In the aftermath of outbreak of JE, a few months back, the KPM Hospital, on the directives of the Health Directorate, Lucknow, set up the epidemic cell.
Later, a separate cell was formed at the District Malaria Hospital at Gwatoli to fight JE or other vector-borne diseases. Dr Madan Mohan was made incharge of the cell to deal with vector-borne diseases.
