In north Kashmir's Baramulla district, Dr Shan-I-Alam and two of his co-workers would deliver a baby and then kill it by hitting on the head before throwing the little body in a nearby stream.

On Friday, Alam, Naseema, a part-time sweeper in the Kupwara sub-district hospital and Nazir Ahmad, a cobbler, were arrested and charged with murder, causing miscarriages and causing death by negligence.

The police said the doctor faces similar charges in two other cases. Senior SP, Kupwara, Irshad Ahmad said in October and November, two babies were found dead near a stream in Kupwara. "Investigations led us to a woman who admitted to having delivered the baby in the district hospital. She also identified the doctor and his helpers."

The woman, 20, and the man, 30, have also been arrested.
