Patients coming to the department are left to the mercy of only one Junior Resident.

Interestingly as the faculty positions of the department were not filled the team of residents has not been formed. Despite four sanctioned posts in the department there, only two were appointed. One of them Dr Shushil Kumar Singh had gone on leave to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Though his leave got over on January 22, 2006, but he never came back to the KGMU.

When KGMU administration enquired from the PGI it was found that Dr Singh had resigned from his service there on May 16, 2005 and there were no further information about him. The executive registrar of PGI Dr KN Prasad in his reply had stated that after resignation Dr Singh has left for Australia but the exact address was not known. Dr Singh wife though works at PGI only.

Several requests from the head of the department of CVTS Dr Shekhar Tandon were sent to the KGMU administration to fill up the vacancy as this was hampering the department output.

Dr Tandon in one of his letters to the varsity administration, also mentioned that summer vacations were going to start and with only a single doctor in the department it would be difficult to continue the working if he goes on leave. The same did happen and presently Dr Tandon is on leave with just one resident for a dozen patients. Operations of the patients would not be done either as the doctor is not present. Unable to decide for appointment the KGMU administration is taking up the matter in the Executive Council meeting on Saturday. The item number five in the meeting would decide upon the termination of Dr Singh but there are no discussion listed for fresh appointment.

The registrar Prof US Pandey says, ‘it is up to the vice chancellor to decide for fresh appointment.’ It may be mentioned here that vice chancellor Prof Mahendra Bhandari’s term is getting over on May 12 and thus he is not in a position to take any administrative decision like fresh appointment on campus.

Keeping these developments CVTS department can be said as ‘closed for summer vacations.’ What will happen to the patients is a question unanswered.
