Every object at this designer restaurant celebrating street food grabs your attention – from the model of a two-seater autorickshaw (you can have your meal in it) to the collage of movie stars on the walls. The décor is stylish kitsch – low seats made of tyres; walls and roof encased in tin sheets. It’s like a snazzy road-side dhaba, but the food doesn’t have the earthiness or the homely touch. The lachcha parantha, for instance, has no texture; the dal is under-cooked. Go to Nathu’s or to Chandni Chowk and you’ll get better ‘street food’; go to Lucknow and you’ll get far better gilawati kebabs at lower prices – Khaaja Chowk will have to work harder at reproducing the tastes that make people keep going back to the Real McCoys. Even the Burmese curry, Kauk-Swe, is nowhere close to the original.
