The two party factions – one led by Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal — and the other by party MLA from Govind Nagar Ajay Kapoor.

Former district Congress chief Abdul Mannan, who was replaced by Mahesh Dixit, was known for his rapport with both the factions.

However, the Sriprakash camp considers the appointment of Dixit a setback to the Ajay camp.

Till date, Ajay Kapoor was calling the shots in the party organisation, especially regarding the decisions related to the south city.

In the last municipal elections also, Kapoor’s influence in the party organisation was clearly evident. Kapoor held the sway over the party organization due to Mannan .

The appointment of Dixit was not very smooth. Kapoor tried his best to get his loyalist Shanker Datt Mishra appointed to the coveted post. But he could not match Jaiswal who is a political heavyweight.

Jaiswal was sidelined in by Kapoor in the party organization during the past two years. Sources said that although Jaiswal was an MP, his supporters in Govind Nagar Vidhan Sabha constituency did not get ticket for municipal election.

Now, with the appointment of his loyalist Mahesh Dixit as district Congress president, Jaiswal is all set to assert his supremacy in the party organisation.

As municipal and Vidhan Sabha elections are round the corner, the supporters of Jaiswal are optimistic about getting a large chunk of party tickets after a long time.

Mannan was holding the coveted post for the past ten years and his replacement was overdue. Since a minority candidate was holding the post for such a long time, it was being speculated that a Brahmin candidate would replace Mannan.

Along with Mahesh Dixit and Shanker Datt Mishra, other Brahmin candidates in the fray for the coveted post included former party MLAs Shyam Mishra and Bhoodhar Narain Mishra.
