Mehtar was allegedly killed by a Gujarat police team in January 2003 in Ahmedabad. The two suspected IB officials had allegedly created a fake profile for Mehtar, describing him as a man sent from the Gulf to kill political leaders. “Our investigation to identify others involved in the crime relating to profiling Jamal and his fake encounter is complete. We will submit the supplementary chargesheet soon,” said the source.

One of the two suspected officials is a retired assistant director who allegedly generated a fake “source report” on Mehtar. The CBI also examined the role of an extradited alleged Dawood Ibrahim aide, Tariq Parveen. Mehtar had worked for Parveen in Dubai as a domestic help.
