This RAW is not for spying

RAW, India’s external intelligence agency, is probably not aware of who’s using its name in a remote corner of the country. But, say leaders of the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), they thought of the Research and Analysis Wing ‘just like that’ while naming a new cell aimed at harnessing youth power in Mizoram.

RAW, India’s external intelligence agency, is probably not aware of who’s using its name in a remote corner of the country. But, say leaders of the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), they thought of the Research and Analysis Wing ‘just like that’ while naming a new cell aimed at harnessing youth power in Mizoram.

“We needed a name that would convey seriousness in addressing issues that concern the youth of the state and helping them to improve the quality of life,” said ZNP president Lalduhawma.

It probably did not strike party leaders that a name like RAW could invite criticism or sarcasm from their political opponents. “One shouldn’t read too much into a name, unless the original RAW sues the party for copyright violation,” said a senior Congress leader. The two had fought Aizawl’s civic polls in 2010 together.
