Infantry School Commandant Lt Gen Satyevir Yadav, who was the chief guest, laid wreath at the Infantry Memorial. A large number of senior serving and retired infantry officers, JCOs and jawans paid homage to those infantrymen who had laid down their lives for the cause of their motherland.
Later, Lt Gen Yadav while addressing a ‘Sainik sammelan’ of the Infantry officers, JCOs and jawans of Mhow exhorted them to keep themselves abreast with the new developments in military tactics, weapons and information technology so as to be always prepared to meet any challenges from our adversaries.
A press release issued by Infantry School public relations officer Lt Col K M Upadhyay said that Infantry Day is a momentous day in the annals of the Indian Army as it was on this historic day 59 years ago on the request of Maharaja Hari Singh, the first gallant infantry man set foot on soil of Kashmir valley and thwarted the designs of Pakistan and successfully repulsed the Razakars from the vicinity of Srinagar air field.
This was the first glorious action fought by the Indian army in the post-independence era. It is to commemorate this glorious action fought by the infantryman of the Indian army that we pay obeisance to the grit and gallantry of the Indian soldiers.
Infantry soldiers proved their mettle in the past and given a bloody nose to the enemy who dared any misadventure against all odds.
Be in the Siachen glacier, evicting intruders from Kargil, battling misguided youth in the northeast, humanitarian relief during natural calamities, keeping United Nations flag flying in Sierra Leone or saving democratically elected governments, the soldiers have risen to the occasion and written a saga of courage and sacrifice in blood and sweat.
