Former Rajya Sabha member and CPM leader Nilotpal Basu on Sunday said the UPA government was responsible for the failure of jan lokpal bill in Parliament.

Addressing a district conference of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) here, he said, “The government knew it well that it does not have majority in the Upper House. Besides, it did not care for the amendments suggested by the Opposition parties. So the bill could not get through.”

The CPM leader said the nexus between leaders in power and corporates was responsible for corruption. “Except us no party is ready to bring the corporate world under the lokpal. The chasm between rich and poor is widening fast and the Union government is responsible for it due to its wrong policies.”

CPM state secretary Inderjit Singh said, “The state government is following in the footsteps of the Union government, as it is creating havoc with people’s lives. The arable land is being acquired recklessly. Lawlessness has touched nadir. Unemployment is on the rise.”

He called for a stir against the government.
