The United States has strongly condemned the attack by the LTTE on Sri Lankan navy vessels that killed two Navy officers and injured several more calling it a "clear violation" of the ceasefire agreement and asked Colombo to "show restraint".
"We strongly condemn the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam attack on the Sri Lankan naval vessels which killed two navy officers and 15 sailors ... This attack is a clear violation of the Ceasefire Agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers," Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard Boucher said in a statement.
"We are deeply concerned about the escalating violence by the Tamil Tigers which has put Sri Lanka at risk for returning to war" he added.
Washington has also Colombo to "show restraint" in the face of these provocations.
"We urge the Government of Sri Lanka to continue to show restraint in the face of these provocations," Boucher said.
