US lawyer defends Saddam as trial opens

The trial of Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants on charges of crimes against humanity resumed on Monday with a US lawyer defending the accused and demanding the stopping of the trial.

"We want to work for justice but that can only happen by having a fair trial and under the current circumstances, that is impossible," lawyer Curtis Doebbler told the court.

"We ask that the trial be stopped and you give us aditional time to prepare," he asked chief judge Rauf Abdel Rahman.
