If the plan involves dancing, walking around for hours or spending an evening at a garba or dandiya event, a chaniya choli makes the most sense.
The silhouette is naturally festive without feeling as formal as a heavily embellished lehenga. The flared skirt also works beautifully with movement, which is particularly useful when you are actually going to dance rather than simply stand around posing for pictures.
For a Navratri night, I would look for a lightweight skirt, a comfortable blouse and a dupatta that can be secured properly. Mirror work, colourful embroidery and traditional prints can add enough detail without requiring heavy jewellery or elaborate styling.
The biggest advantage is practicality. You can have the full festive effect without feeling like your outfit is getting in the way.

Think Diwali parties, festive dinners, wedding functions or larger family celebrations where the dress code leans towards occasionwear. Unlike a chaniya choli, which often has a distinctly folk-inspired feel, a lehenga can move between traditional and contemporary depending on its fabric, embroidery and blouse design.

For a family puja, daytime festive lunch or a more intimate celebration, I would lean towards lighter sarees in fabrics such as cotton, silk blends or lightweight georgette. A beautiful border and well-fitted blouse can be enough.
For an evening celebration, the same saree can become much more glamorous with richer silk, tissue, sequins, metallic accents or statement jewellery.
This is also the option I would consider when you want something that feels festive but not necessarily like traditional occasionwear from head to toe. A contemporary blouse, unusual drape or modern jewellery can completely change the mood.

The easiest way to choose is to think about movement
This is the part I would not ignore when buying a festive outfit.
If you know you are going to dance, walk around a lot or spend several hours outdoors, an outfit that looks spectacular in a photograph but requires constant adjusting is probably not the one you will enjoy wearing.
A chaniya choli gives you freedom of movement, while a lighter saree can be surprisingly comfortable once the drape is secured properly. A heavily embellished lehenga is better saved for occasions where you are not going to spend the entire evening moving around.
Your footwear matters too. There is little point choosing an elaborate outfit if you pair it with shoes you cannot comfortably stand or walk in.
You do not have to dress according to the most formal option
One mistake people make with festive dressing is assuming that every celebration requires the heaviest outfit in their wardrobe.
It doesn't.
A small family puja does not need the same level of dressing as a wedding reception. Similarly, a casual Diwali gathering does not automatically call for a heavily embellished lehenga.
I find that festive outfits look more intentional when there is some relationship between the clothes and the setting. A simple silk saree can look incredibly elegant at a family lunch, while a colourful chaniya choli can make much more sense than a restrictive lehenga at a garba night.

Choose a saree if versatility matters most to you. With the right blouse, jewellery, drape and fabric, one saree can work for everything from a daytime family gathering to an evening celebration.
Ultimately, festive dressing does not have to be about choosing the most elaborate outfit. The better choice is the one that suits the occasion, lets you move comfortably and still feels like you.
