Based on a medical evaluation report by doctors at KEM Hospital. Parel, the woman was granted permission by the Supreme Court on Monday to abort her 24-week-old foetus.

The present laws allow abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

“The abortion went well. The patient is doing good,” said Dr Rina Wani, professor of gynaecology and obstretics at Cooper hospital.

She said the doctors will psychologically evaluate her before discharge. “She may be discharged in a day or two,” said Dr Wani.

The woman had told the court that the foetus was diagnosed with anencephaly, a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull, but doctors refused her abortion as the pregnancy has gone beyond the 20-week legal ceiling.

The woman told the court that she was raped by her former fiancé who went back on his promise of marriage. She found out about the pregnancy after 20 weeks had elapsed.
