The fourth Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture was held at the Raj Kapoor Pavilloin on the third day of the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) 2018 on Sunday.
This year, the lecture was on scriptwriting where Mexican film-maker Rodrigo Plá and Maurizio Nichetii, an actor and director from Italy, who put fort some important points on the topic.
Nichetti found the enthusiasm for cinema rather strange, for this kind of enthusiasm was found in Europe 40 years ago. He said that seeing the theatres full of people nowadays is something fantastic. “Reality is important and films tell you something real and social, but you add a little bit of dream. People come to see this dream rather than the reality and this is what I try to show in my films,” Nichetti said.
Talking about the basics of scriptwriting, Plá said that he likes stories which involve unethical problems. “Ideas come from everywhere. I think, while writing, it is necessary to pick one character, put it in a conflict and take it till the end. Also, one must not say the same thing as repetition kills the charm,” Plá added.
Nichetti, who is from Milan, started his journey with the world of stage mime and cartoons. His debut film was without any dialogues and describing it he said, “Cinema is all about visuals. Dialogues are necessary, but never so important for cinema as a lot dialogues are good for book, radio and theatre.”
Explaining his approach towards cinema, Plá said, “I believe dialogues can be added or modified as per character.”
Meanwhile, the Italian film-maker claimed that all his films have females as protagonist and that he believes in creating a dreamy start to portray reality in his work. But, Plá believes in sticking to reality and taking inspiration and references from newspapers.
Nichetti mentioned that he learns a lot from listening to other directors and scriptwriters. He concluded by requesting everyone to do honest work and make only what is in one’s capacity.
