Doctors root for new guidelines to gauge and manage obesity

Eight doctors in Mumbai have prescribed new obesity guidelines based on associated functional, psychological, and metabolic conditions, challenging the previous guidelines that only considered Body Mass Index (BMI). The new guidelines emphasize the importance of treating obesity in individuals with moderate obesity and co-morbidities. The doctors have graded obesity into four stages for preventive action, taking into account the impact on physical, mental, and metabolic well-being. The guidelines aim to provide expert recommendations and an adaptable algorithm for obesity management in India, considering factors such as patient psychology and long-term outcomes.
