Rise in treefall incidents in city due to rapid development, concretisation

Experts attribute the rise in treefall incidents in Pune to rapid development, concretisation of roads, lack of soil around tree trunks, and non-scientific tree planting.

In 2014, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had ordered during one of the hearings that a three feet circumference around the trees be kept free of any concretisation which would help the growth of trees and help retain their stability. (HT PHOTO)

Isolated rain fails to keep searing heat in city at bay

Delhi experienced a maximum temperature of 36.7°C on Wednesday, one degree above normal for this time of year, with isolated parts experiencing a drizzle in the morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said southwesterly winds blew towards the region in the last 24 hours, which brought some moisture from the Arabian sea, leading to localised rain spells in some parts. The rise in mercury is likely to continue, with temperatures forecast to touch 37°C on Thursday, 38°C by Friday and 39°C on Saturday, and cross the 40-degree mark by Sunday.
