Israel-Hamas war Day 3 highlights: 11 US nationals killed; Washington begins munition delivery to Israel

The United States has said that it is moving an aircraft carrier, ships and jets to the eastern Mediterranean, reports the BBC.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin said the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, a missile cruiser and four missile destroyers were heading to the region. US fighter jets would also be sent.

Haifa is one of the main seaports in Israel, where about 99% of all goods move in and out of the country by sea.

Investor worries come as Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Saturday launched the largest military assault on Israel in decades, killing hundreds of Israelis.

The Israel air force on Monday updated on the war situation and said in a post on X “War situation picture - IDF spokesperson's update to the public | Monday, October 9, 2023, 08:30. The IDF spokesman informs that in the last 20 hours, the IDF carried out 4 waves of air strikes in the Gaza Strip, during which more than 800 targets were attacked. Between 50-60 fighter planes participated in each attack wave.”

Israel formally declared war on Sunday following unprecedented large-scale attacks by the militant group Hamas a day before. Here's what has happened since overnight:

• The death toll has surpassed 1,100 in Israel and Gaza.
• The Israeli Army said that it is actively fighting Hamas militants in seven to eight locations in Gaza.
• Tel Aviv also claims that it struck more than “500 targets” allegedly belonging to the Hamas group in Gaza overnight.
• Several major international air carriers have suspended flight services with Tel Aviv.
• A video surfaced on social media has captured the attack on a music festival in Israel. About 260 people were killed there and many more were abducted.
• Among those killed in the attack on Israel were 10 Nepalis and 12 Thai citizens. Many have been abducted as well.

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip says that at least 413 people have died, including 78 children, reported Al Jazeera. More than 2,300 have been wounded. The toll includes eight entire families, or a total of 54 residents.

In Palestine's Rafah, an Israeli airstrike early on Monday killed at least 19 people, including women and children, a doctor at a local hospital told AP.

The doctor said that among those killed was Rafaat Abu Hilal, a leader of a local armed group.

Hungary has evacuated 215 people from Israel by air on two planes overnight and they have safely landed in Budapest, the country's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said, according to Reuters.

The Israeli Army on Monday said that fighting is ongoing between the Israeli forces and Hamas militants in seven to eight locations around the Gaza Strip, according to AFP.

"We are still fighting. There are between seven to eight open places around Gaza (where) we have still warriors fighting terrorists," military spokesman Richard Hecht told reporters.

Israeli air strikes and artillery shelling struck more than 500 targets allegedly belonging to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups in the Gaza Strip overnight, the Israeli military said Monday.

"Overnight IDF (Israeli army) fighter jets, helicopters, aircraft and artillery struck over 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip," the military said in a statement, according to AFP.

Several international air carriers have suspended flight services with Tel Aviv in light of the Hamas militant attack on Israel and the country's retaliation, reported AP.

At least 10 Nepali citizens were killed when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Saturday, Nepal's ambassador to Israel told CNN. Among those killed were agriculture students in the Alumim kibbutz. One student remains missing.

Iran has said that was "not involved" in the attack carried out by Hamas militants in Israel, Reuters reported, citing the country's mission to the United Nations.

"We emphatically stand in unflinching support of Palestine; however, we are not involved in Palestine's response, as it is taken solely by Palestine itself," it said in a statement.

Netanyahu said Sunday that his security cabinet had made the decision to destroy Hamas’ ability to govern in a way that posed a threat to Israeli civilians.

Oil prices jumped more than $4 a barrel in early Asian trade on Monday, as dramatic military clashes between Israeli and Hamas forces over the weekend deepened political uncertainty across the Middle East.

Brent crude rose $4.18, or 4.94%, to $88.76 a barrel by 0120 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $87.02 a barrel, up $4.23, or 5.11%.

The surge in oil prices reversed last week's downward trend - the largest weekly decline since March - in which Brent fell about 11% and WTI retreated more than 8% amid concerns about high interest rates and their impact on global demand.
