Drug peddling: US names Dawood aides
The US on Tuesday named Dawood Ibrahim associates Chhota Shakeel and Ibrahim Tiger Memon as drug traffickers. Dawood has been on the US list since 2006, along with his gang, D Company. HT reports.
The US on Tuesday named Dawood Ibrahim associates Chhota Shakeel and Ibrahim Tiger Memon as drug traffickers. Dawood has been on the US list since 2006, along with his gang, D Company.
These actions are undertaken by the US treasury department to disrupt and choke off funds to these designated entities. D Company has been involved in several terrorist strikes in India, most famously the 1993 Mumbai bombings.
The groups was also named by David Coleman Headley as part of an ISI initiative involving the “Karachi boys”. Memon is alleged to have masterminded the 1993 bombings and fled, possibly, to Pakistan.
India hails US move
India has welcomed the US move to Dawood aides as drug traffickers. In an oblique reference to Pakistan, the external affairs ministry spokesperson also urged the countries who “may harbor any of these should bring to them to justice.”
“We welcome any such designations because it is reaffirmation of what we have always been saying narco- terrorism is a threat not only to India but to the world,” MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.
