David Ortiz Taveras sold drugs out of the building from where he jumped on Saturday, drug enforcement agency spokesman Roberto Lebron said. He added that the suspect landed on the roof of a shack.

The 23-year-old drug dealer lived on the third floor of the building and ran up to the roof when he saw drug enforcement agents arrive to search his apartment.

Ortiz Taveras's decision to jump to avoid arrest "nearly cost him his life", Lebron said.

"The suspect jumped to avoid getting captured, but his effort was in vain," he said.

Ortiz Taveras was arrested and taken to a hospital, where he is under guard.
