A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday off the east coast of Japan, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake hit 139 kilometres (87 miles) east-southeast of Iwaki, Honshu, at 7:29 pm (1029 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said it had not issued a tsunami warning.
