A municipal worker cleaning the drain first saw the amputated parts and informed the police.
Officials reached the spot and after seizing the body parts, carried out a search operation for more parts the remainder of the day.
However, no more parts were recovered nearby. A dog squad was also called in to search the area.
Chandimandir station house officer (SHO) inspector Arvind Kumar said: “We searched the area, but failed to recover more body parts. We will start afresh on Monday and try and solve the mystery.”
He added that the body seemed to be a male aged between 30 and 35, but claimed that nothing could be confirmed before the post-mortem, expected to be carried out on Monday.
Assistant commissioner of police Jagtar Singh said: “It is impossible to identify the body, till we recover the upper part also. The search operation will be intensified on Monday to see if more body parts are recovered.”
