Nathan McSweeney

Nathan Andrew McSweeney is an Australian cricketer who has made a significant impact on the national cricket scene, particularly in Test cricket. Currently the captain of South Australia, McSweeney also plays for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, having previously represented the Queensland Bulls and the Melbourne Renegades. In addition to his domestic leadership roles, he has captained both the Australia A and Prime Minister’s XI teams, showcasing his leadership qualities early in his career. McSweeney plays for Glenelg in South Australian Premier Cricket and has established himself as a player with immense promise.

McSweeney’s cricketing journey began at a young age, as he was selected to represent Australia in the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. During the tournament, he produced a match-winning performance, scoring 156 runs against Papua New Guinea, a knock that highlighted his potential. His first-class debut came later that year, in October 2018, when he played for Queensland against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield. A few years later, McSweeney made his mark in the Big Bash League, making his T20 debut for the Melbourne Renegades in January 2020. His performances during the 2022–23 BBL season earned him a two-year contract with the Brisbane Heat, where he was brought in as a local replacement player for Marnus Labuschagne in 2021.

In 2021, McSweeney made a significant move to South Australia, and by September of that year, he was playing in the Marsh One-Day Cup for the state, making his List A debut. McSweeney’s growth continued, and on December 1, 2022, he scored his maiden first-class century against Tasmania, a defining moment in his career as he finished with 118 runs. His leadership journey also began to take shape, and in March 2023, he was appointed as captain of the Australia A team for their tour of New Zealand. McSweeney excelled in the tour’s first unofficial Test, scoring 50 in the first innings and an unbeaten 69 in the second, demonstrating his composure and leadership under pressure.

McSweeney’s leadership skills continued to shine in the 2023–24 Big Bash League season. Stepping in for Usman Khawaja, the regular Brisbane Heat captain, McSweeney led the team to their second Big Bash League title. His all-around performances in the Marsh One-Day Cup in early 2024 further elevated his status, as he scored 307 runs at an average of 51.16 and took three wickets, earning a place in the tournament's team of the year.

The following months saw McSweeney’s career continue to soar, as he was named captain of South Australia for the 2024–25 domestic season. His maiden List A century came in October 2024, when he scored a remarkable 137 runs from 131 balls against Queensland. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the India A tour of Australia, where he reprised his role as captain of Australia A. During the first unofficial Test, McSweeney made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 39 in the first innings and an unbeaten 88 in the second, leading his team to a successful chase of 225 runs. This tour marked a major turning point, as McSweeney was called up to the Australian Test squad for the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

For McSweeney, this was the culmination of years of hard work and determination. Despite never having opened the batting at first-class level, he was selected to do so for the first time in his Test career. He earned his baggy green cap as the 467th cricketer to represent Australia in Test cricket and made his debut in the first Test against India at Perth Stadium. In his second innings, he opened alongside Usman Khawaja, making an immediate mark by scoring a boundary before being dismissed for 10 runs by Jasprit Bumrah. While his initial outings in the series were challenging, with a few low scores, McSweeney’s inclusion in the squad is a testament to his resilience, adaptability, and potential.

After the disappointment of the Perth Test, McSweeney remained part of Australia’s plans for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, featuring in the first three Tests before being left out for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests. He returned seamlessly to domestic leadership, captaining South Australia to a historic Sheffield Shield title in 2024–25 and repeated the feat in 2025–26, leading the Redbacks to back-to-back Shield championships. In the 2025–26 final against Victoria, he struck a crucial first-innings 52 to anchor South Australia before they sealed a 56-run victory. Additionally, he has maintained a vital top-order presence for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.

He further enhanced his subcontinent credentials during an Australia A tour of India, leading from the front with a commanding 74 and 85 in the 2nd unofficial Test in Lucknow. To broaden his red-ball experience in English conditions, McSweeney joined Leicestershire for the early part of the 2026 County Championship season, marking his arrival with an unbeaten debut century (100*) against Glamorgan.

His standing in Australia's Test pipeline was further reinforced in late 2026, when he was selected for the Australia A tour of India, batting at number three in the four-day matches in Puducherry to push his case for higher honors.
