2 IIT Roorkee professors held for bridge collapse that killed 6

Tehri Garhwal police have arrested two professors of Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee (IIT-R) in connection with the collapse of a bridge in Srinagar Garhwal in March 2012 that claimed 6 lives and left 18 injured. The arrested professors are being produced before the court in Tehri today, police said.
Police on Sunday night arrested Vipul Prakash and Vijay Kumar, both working as professors with the civil engineering department of the institute. Tehri police with the coordination of Roorkee police arrested duo from their residence.
“Both accused are being produced before the court today. We will seek their remand” told Mamta Bohra, the police official investigating the case told HT over phone on Monday.
As per Bohra, police had earlier arrested owners of two construction companies – who had constructed the bridge above Alaknanda River in Srinagar Garhwal. The 190 meter long under construction bridge had collapsed on March 25, 2012.
State government is investigation is matter. An engineer with Public Works Department (PWD) was suspended shortly after the bridge collapsed. Later a case was registered under section 304 of IPC in Kirtinagar police station against the Hillways constructions, Devbhoomi builders, Madhwa hitech engineering pvt ltd and PWD Pauri Garhwal on the application of Mukender Singh, one of the injured labors.
Madhwa HITECH Eng Pvt Limited of Hyderabad that started construction of the bridge in 2006 was later dropped owing to the slow pace of work. The contract was then awarded to Hillways Construction of Rishikesh. The Devbhoomi builder of Rishikesh was also roped in with the task of laying deck and approach slabs of the bridge.
While IIT-R was instrumental in designing of the bridge.
Following the incident, the project of designing the 450 meters long Dobra Chanti Bridge over Tehri Lake was withdrawn from IIT Roorkee and was given to IIT Kharagpur.
Officials earlier told HT that one bridge at Devprayag in Pauri district, designed by IIT Roorkee had collapsed in the storm in 1991, only a few days before its completion.
