2G verdict: Sibal meets PM after SC judgement

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh shortly after the Supreme Court judgement that canncelled all 122 licences issued in January, 2008.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh shortly after the Supreme Court judgement that canncelled all 122 licences issued in January, 2008.

He is understood to have discussed the implications of the Court order and steps to be taken.


The Supreme Court has cancelled 122 licences holding that they were issued in a "totally arbitrary and unconstitutional manner" and asked the government to initiate process to allot fresh licences based on auction of spectrum.

The government has been asked to seek recommendations from telecom regulator TRAI in this regard and complete the process within four months.

The major companies affected by this verdict are Uninor, Sistema-Shyam, Videocon, Etisalat DB, Loop telecom and Idea among others.
