Jama Masjid area revamp plan on Net
All information on Jama Masjid is now just a click away. Municipal Commissioner K.S. Mehra on Thursday launched a dynamic website on Jama Masjid Precinct Re-development plan.
The website will provide information on all aspects of the plan including re-development of Jama Masjid complex and its neighbourhood.
“Through this website, we want the public to participate in this plan. All their suggestions and queries posted on the website will be taken note of and answered. We want to promote transparency regarding the whole plan,” said Mehra.
The major sections of the website include Jama Masjid, photo gallery, conservation, restoration, precinct, re-development plan, tourism, Shahjahanabad, research and links.
“In the past one year, the Jama Masjid precinct re-development plan has created much interest among Delhiites. It has been widely appreciated but some questions have been raised on its feasibility and appropriateness. So we decided to create this website to give all information about the project as well as history of Jama Masjid,” said Mehra. All comments related to the plan can be posted on the website too.
In the new plan submitted by the MCD, only two levels of underground parking have been incorporated. “We have now reduced the underground parking levels from three to two and its location is now at a safe distance between 170 and 200 metres,” said a senior MCD official.
According to the new plan, all encroachment from the precinct would be removed. “We conducted an excavation study by the IIT and necessary modifications have been made,” added the official.
The first draft for Jama Masjid Precinct Re-development plan was submitted to High Court in October 2006. The Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) examined it in January 2007. The final plan by MCD was submitted to DUAC in December 2007. Mehra said, since certain details were recommended by DUAC, the plan was re-submitted in April 2008.
