The 8:30 pm broadcast was to be for 30 minutes and Gandhi sometimes spoke for 31-32 minutes. When Gandhi's secretary Sushila Nair found out about this, she threatened to sack Madan and the AIR chief. Madan then spoke to Gandhi. "Simple, signal me at 29 minutes," Gandhi said. "He would stop mid-sentence," he added.
