The first batch of Agniveers will complete their four-year military service by the end of this year and will retire. Ahead of the completion of their tenure, the Centre is planning multiple government job options for those who exit the armed forces.
According to the report, ex-Agniveers will likely be allowed to choose where they want to serve next. The Central government is considering giving them options across various government organisations.

Someone who has attended meetings on the issue said, "A meeting held by the Union Home Ministry was attended by representatives from all CAPFs and also defence ministry officials. Candidates will most likely have the option to submit their preferences. An Agniveer from Haryana may want to work in Delhi or Haryana police or a specific CAPF. Similarly, a Rajasthan Agniveer may want to work in the state police or another CAPF. The home ministry-appointed committee is working on these details."
Government job options for retired Agniveers
1. Indian Railways and the Indian Army have introduced a Framework of Cooperation to expand post-retirement employment opportunities for Agniveers and serving Army personnel transitioning to civilian life. As per a report by News on AIR, under the policy, 10 per cent horizontal reservation in Level-2 and above posts and 20 per cent in Level-1 posts has been provisioned for ex-servicemen. In addition, five per cent reservation in Level-2 and above posts and 10 per cent in Level-1 posts has been earmarked for ex-agniveers.

2. The home ministry has already announced that half of the entry-level posts in forces such as the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles will be filled by ex-Agniveers.
3. Moreover, some states have announced that between 10% and 20% of entry-level posts will be filled by ex-Agniveers. Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, has approved a 20 per cent horizontal reservation for ex-Agniveers in direct recruitment to the post of Jail Warder (Group C) in the Prisons Department of Chandigarh.
4. Other than this, 20 percent 20 per cent horizontal reservation will also be provided against eligible posts in the Chandigarh Fire Services and Forest department as well.
5. Approval on the grant of 20 per cent horizontal reservation to ex-Agniveers in direct recruitment to the post of Constable (Executive and Wireless) in the Chandigarh Police is also given.

6. The retired Agniveers will be entitled to 50% reservation in the recruitment to constable (General Duty) and rifleman posts in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles. Last month, the Home Ministry informed the Parliament that they will be exempted from the written examination, physical standard test (PST) and physical efficiency test (PET).
Meanwhile, media reports in July 2026 suggested that the Central government is considering retaining a larger number of Agniveers for regular service in the armed forces.
The Central government launched the Agnipath scheme in June 2022. This is a military recruitment program that recruits young personnel into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a 4-year term. Under this scheme, recruits are known as Agniveers. The age limit should be between 17.5 and 21 years, although the upper age limit was temporarily relaxed to 23 years for the first recruitment cycle following the COVID-19 pandemic.
