Style file: Great expectations
The talented newcomer Namrat Beriwal is exhibiting Slither, her collection, along with other students at the Hotel Ashok.
Aspiring fashion designer and JD Institute of Technology graduate Namrat Beriwal says she admires designers but never wants to follow them. “I’ll carve my own niche,” says the St Mary’s, Kanpur, alumna.

The talented newcomer is exhibiting Slither, her collection, along with several graduating students at the Hotel Ashok today. “Our collection is inspired by the movements of the snake,” announces Beriwal. In a way Beriwal and her classmates have managed to create the illusion of a snake in the form of a belt using small light bulbs wrapped around the waist.
Adhering to the theme is DPS Vasant Kunj alumna Ruchi Singhal, who has done a jewellery design course from JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Her jewellery collection shows the rising sun in the form of a pendant and a snake in the necklace with red garnet denoting the eye. “There’s so much to choose from if you have a theme like nature. We’ve been working on the collection for a month and the three pieces I’ve designed are in sterling silver.” Sisters Elvera and Evelyn Kapoor shifted base from Dubai to study fashion in the country. “We must carry forward our traditional craftsmanship,” says Kapoor.
Inspired by animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi, the Kapoor sisters have created an ode to Chiru, the endangered Tibetan antelope. “Most of the collection comprises fusion-skirts worn with duppattas. The theme is ethnic but the interpretation contemporary," says Elvera. To go with the collection Sonia Walia, who has completed a jewellery design course from JD, has tried to show nature in all its glory. "I was enticed by the astronomical wonder when Venus crossed the sun after 122 years. I have a necklace in black and white diamonds to depict this phenomenon," says Walia. Melting snow and Molten Lava, the other two pieces, are equally unique. "The idea was to let your imagination wild. But somewhere down the line we wanted to translate it into a practical piece. That's what the JD education teaches us," says Walia.
