2024 India elections Lok Sabha Voting Updates: 60% average voter turnout in phase 1

BJP and TMC members clashed at the Chandmari area of Cooch Behar in West Bengal. Stone pelting occurred from both the sides and one person got injured.

Villagers from Tandhera in Muzaffarnagar didn't cast a single vote till 8 am, voicing their concerns against the delay in the construction of roads. 

Independent UP candidate from Nagina alleged that the BJP is ensuring that there are no fair elections, and are not allowing people to cast their votes in his favour.

Independent candidate from UP's Nagina constituency alleged that more than 10 EVMs are not functioning properly, and camera inside polling booths are also faulty.

The official X handle of TMC posted, “BJP has turned the festival of democracy into the MURDER of democracy. Our BLAs were viciously attacked by BJP goons in booth 226 and 227 of Barokodali GP, Alipurduar. Central Forces stood idly by and watched them unleash violence. We have been attracting EC's attention to BJP's criminal underbelly but alas they refused to act. And now our workers are having to bear the brunt of their inaction!”

Some of the key candidates in Tamil Nadu are - DMK's Dayanidhi Maran (Central Chennai), A Raja (Nilgiris) and Kanimozhi (Thoothukudi), BJP's K Annamalai (Coimbatore), L Murugan (Nilgiris) and Tamilisai Soundararajan (South Chennai), former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (Ramanathapuram), Congress party's Karti Chidambaram (Sivaganga), AIADMK's J Jayavardhan (South Chennai) and AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran (Theni).

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and party's Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai cast his vote for the elections today. K Annamalai is BJP's candidate from Coimbatore. 

BJP candidate from Bikaner Arjun Ram Meghwal said on polling day, "It is the festival of democracy today. Voting will be done today on a total of 102 seats in the country and 12 seats in Rajasthan including the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat. Today, a strong foundation of 'Viksit Bharat' will be laid..."

Congress leader Kamal Nath, whose son Nakul Nath is contesting from the Chhindwara seat, said on Friday, "I have full faith in the people of Chhindwara. I have full hope that they will stand by the truth."

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, "When I reached the polling station around 6:30 AM, there were around 200 people present at the polling station, which is a good message that people are participating in the voting process enthusiastically...A very good voter turnout can be seen in this election..."

Congress' Sivaganga constituency candidate Karti Chidambaram said, "People are very unhappy with the BJP-led central government and people will vote out the BJP government and they will overwhelmingly vote for the INDIA alliance in Tamil Nadu..."

After casting his vote in Tamil Nadu, Congress leader P Chidambaram said, "I am very happy and proud that I have been able to cast my vote in the Lok Sabha elections. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, I am absolutely confident that the INDIA group will win all 39 Parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu...This is the first phase of elections, there are seven phases...Today all of Tamil Nadu votes and I am absolutely confident that we will win all seats."

Marking the start of Phase 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “The 2024 Lok Sabha elections commence today! As 102 seats across 21 States and UTs go to the polls, I urge all those voting in these seats to exercise their franchise in record numbers. I particularly call upon the young and first time voters to vote in large numbers. After all, every vote counts and every voice matters!”

The first phase of voting for the Lok Sabha election 2023 commenced at 7 am today, across 21 states and Union Territories.

Not just the voting for the Lok Sabha election, but Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh assembly election voting will also take place today. Voting for 92 assembly seats across the two states will begin today at 7 am, and results will be out on June 2.

Tamil Nadu, which sends 39 members to the Lok Sabha, will witness polling in all constituencies. The key candidates include former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan (Chennai South), DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran (Chennai Central), former Union minister A Raja (Nilgiri) and Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai (Coimbatore).
Further, Union minister Jitendra Singh is in poll fray from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. Union minister Nitin Gadkari is contesting from Maharashtra's Nagpur for the third time.

The voting in Phase 1 of Lok Sabha elections is set to take place in 102 states across  21 states and UTs today. These states and UTs include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

The first phase of voting for the Lok Sabha election 2024 is set to commence from 7 am today across 21 states. The voting will come to an end at 6 pm in the evening.
