After the Gandhi family, Congress in the region was known by two families-- HN Bahuguna and Dr Rajendra Kumari Bajpai. It was the Bajpais who shouldered the responsibility of reviving the party. Rajendra Kumar Bajpai was close to Indira Gandhi and her son Ashok was district president of the party for a long time. Party’s refusal to give him a ticket came as a shock to Ashok, who today decided to resign from the Congress.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders, close to Bajpai, have urged Sonia Gandhi not to accept his resignation and also reconsider the decision of not giving him ticket.
