Police said the statue at the government high school in Haspura block was severely damaged. Former Congress chief minister Bindeshwari Dubey installed the statue about 20 years ago.

Prahlad Ram, the school principal, said school students noticed broken pieces of the statue on Friday morning.

"I informed the police and demanded action against people involved in the desecration," Ram said.

The police had registered a case under Section 295 of the IPC and the Damage to Public Property Act. Leaders of all parties and social activists condemned the incident.
